Calories in Chicken
August 31, 2008
Eating chicken is becoming more and more popular. So the question of calories in chicken interests more and more people. Let’s try and make some sense into all of that. So how many calories in chicken? Let’s find out.
Besides portions there are 3 things you need to take in account when calculating the calories in chicken:
- The chicken part
- The chicken skin
- The way you cook the chicken
Different chicken parts’ calories can vary: from 110 calories for 3.5oz (100 gr) chicken breast without skin to 137 calories in chicken back without skin. And from 161 calories in chicken drumstick with skin to 319 calories in chicken back with skin. That’s a very big difference. Parts like breast, drumstick and leg (without skin) would be a good choice if you are looking to lower the amount of calories in chicken you eat.
Now the amount of calories in chicken skin is a completely different story. There are no questions here. The chicken skin is very high in fat and very high in calories. 80% of the calories in chicken skin comes from the fat! And fat, of course, has other disadvantages. So I say, loose the chicken skin and the calories in chicken skin. You don’t really need it.
And for the cooking style: stewing or grilling is always better than frying. You are already consuming calories in chicken, why add the calories in oil? Grilling gives a good solution for that great taste without increasing the calories level.
