Calories in Chicken
Eating chicken is becoming more and more popular. So the question of calories in chicken interests more and more people. Let’s try and make some sense into all of that. So how many calories in chicken? Let’s find out.
Besides portions there are 3 things you need to take in account when calculating the calories in chicken:
- The chicken part
- The chicken skin
- The way you cook the chicken
Different chicken parts’ calories can vary: from 110 calories for 3.5oz (100 gr) chicken breast without skin to 137 calories in chicken back without skin. And from 161 calories in chicken drumstick with skin to 319 calories in chicken back with skin. That’s a very big difference. Parts like breast, drumstick and leg (without skin) would be a good choice if you are looking to lower the amount of calories in chicken you eat.
Now the amount of calories in chicken skin is a completely different story. There are no questions here. The chicken skin is very high in fat and very high in calories. 80% of the calories in chicken skin comes from the fat! And fat, of course, has other disadvantages. So I say, loose the chicken skin and the calories in chicken skin. You don’t really need it.
And for the cooking style: stewing or grilling is always better than frying. You are already consuming calories in chicken, why add the calories in oil? Grilling gives a good solution for that great taste without increasing the calories level.

Pizza Calories
August 29, 2008
Why is it that foods that you love, like pizza, is so full of calories? Pizza calories are infamous for being both high and come from the fat of the cheese. But there are ways for reducing the amount of pizza calories you are going to eat. It has to do with the size of the pizza, the crust and the toppings.
It might not look that way, but the size (12″ vs. 14″) has a very big impact of the pizza calories. A medium slice (12″) can have 200-270 calories. Compare that with the large slice (14″) with 280-390 calories. And if you’re having more than one slice, don’t forget those pizza calories add up!
Like we said, cheese is a big resource of fat and pizza calories. Extra cheese on a large slice of pizza can add up to 60 calories (around 20% more of the original pizza calories level). Other rich in fat topping like pepperoni, sausage and bacon would add a similar amount of calories.
Among the different types of crust - going for the thin one would earn you the least amount of pizza calories. Don’t go for those thick pan pizza and especially not those which are filled with more cheese. I don’t even one to know the number of pizza calories. It’s scary!
There is no real way around it. Pizza calories are not really the healthiest calories around. But if you still want to eat your pizza, it’s better to have it with the least amount of pizza calories you can.

Cheese Calories
August 27, 2008
Since cheese comes from milk, it has similar nutrition values. This means usually a high level of cheese calories that come mainly from fat. On the other hadn you do “good” things from milk and cheese like calcium and protein.
Just so you get an idea of how the fat affects the amount of cheese calories, read carefully these figures:
In a single slice of “real cheddar” (1 oz) you get 113 calories. 73% out of those cheese calories come from fat! That’s over 80 calories and that’s a lot. Other cheese fat percentage might vary, so you need to check it out very closely if you don’t want to find yourself eating fat calories instead of cheese calories. A good idea would be to eat white, soft and fresh cheeses. They are usually low in fat, have less cheese calories and their taste is very refreshing.
You should also remember that cheese is used as an extra or topping for salads, potatoes and other dishes. It is best that you stick to your diet and don’t add those cheese calories to what you eat. It’s not worth it.
Here are some cheese calories info that you can use (amount of calories per 3.5oz of cheese):
- American Chedder = 239 cheese calories
- Cheddar Cheese = 403 cheese calories
- Colby Cheese = 394 cheese calories
- Cottage, creamed = 103 cheese calories
- Cottage, 1% milk fat = 72 cheese calories
- Feta Cheese = 264 cheese calories
- Mozzarella, whole milk = 300 cheese calories
- Mozzarella, non fat = 149 cheese calories
